NEW! Book Ha Ha Bar & Grill
Ha! Ha! Grill is another large chain bar/restaurant to open in the Spinningfields complex. With high ceilings, plenty of shiny black surfaces contrasting with earthy reds and deeply stained wood, and a terrace which runs alongside the canal, the restaurant is certainly stylish enough to hold its own against neighbouring restaurants such as Zizzi and Strada.
One of the most striking things about Ha Ha Bar & Grill are the waiters. Friendly and warm from the start, this is American-style service where your starters and mains are delivered with a large side-order of banter.
Though they are quick to emphasis local ingredients, the menu is less striking than the service. The starters feature a soup, a pate, bruschetta and deep fried goat’s cheese. The mains are no more adventurous, with sausage & mash, rack of lamb and the ubiquitous corn-fed chicken breast dulling the impact of more interesting dishes such as the chilli marinated pork or whole calves’ liver. There are also selections of sandwiches, salads and a grill menu offering steaks, chicken and fish.
The dishes may lack originality but they are executed well with good presentation and nicely-balanced flavours. The rack of lamb in particular stands out, slow-cooked to tender perfection and served with just the right amount of fruity gravy.
Desserts are again standard options with a Bramley apple crumble, a crème brulee and a lemon cheesecake all making an appearance. However, the inclusion of a perfectly executed individual pecan tart and Rocombe Farm organic ice cream lifts the selection slightly.
Prices are reasonable at around £5 for a starter and mains between £8.25 for sausages and mash and £16.50 for a T-Bone steak, with a varying wine list.
