NEW! Book Marmalade

The ethos at Marmalade, which occupies what was formerly The Nose on the fashionable Beech Road in Chorlton, is that their food has the greatest respect for British tradition. Food that your parents grew up on, but it’s cooked in a modern context. Ingredients are sourced from local, independent farmers. This award-winning restaurant is in the Michelin Bar & Bistro Guide 2007 and only two Lancashire establishments made the grade.

The interior matches the purported simplicity of the food, with cherry wood dining furniture, magnolia with aquamarine colour scheme, wooden floors, a few framed pictures of everyday objects and the occasional flower display. There is a sublime Englishness about the place, an informal, comfortable feeling is if we’re dining in our favourite aunt’s (impeccably dressed) house in a Cheshire village. Except, our aunt’s dining room won’t fit 70 covers.

To understand the point about back-to-basics, British simplicity, just examine the menu. The main courses include such classics as bangers and mash (£6.95, with vegetarian option available), lemon sole (£14.50), roast beef with Yorkshire pudding and vegetables (£12.50), pie, chips and gravy (£10.50). The last option might sound a bit too ‘local chippy’ for some, but the pie options include smoked haddock and prawn for the seafood lovers and those wanting some adventure in their pies.

We never expected to be disappointed with Marmalade and the reputation is justified. During the winter and spring months they have served some hearty, wholesome food but it’s hard to adjust for the summer without the menu becoming a list of salads. We might need to make a return visit to make a comparison.

Not impressed by steven smith (rated 1/10)
all i want to say is that we sat there on a sunday afternoon waiting for 20 mins before we were asked whether we wanted drinks and were then given a menu.
waited another 15 mins before we were told that the kitchen closed at 3pm, it was now 3.20 pm. The chef refused to cook us anything and there were no signs either inside or outside indicating that the kitchen closed at 3pm and this was due to staff shortages.
NOT MY PROBLEM!!
Very dis-appointed and will never recommend this place to anybody.

not the best Marmalade by Jenny turnock (rated 4/10)
8 of us came for Sunday lunch yesterday for my daughters birthday & were very disapointed-serveral things not on the menu & we wern't told until we were ready to order(no parsnips for one when you are so near to shops) 4 meals were served cold & had to be sent back, but even then they were not good, only 2 staff on for a full restruant so service slow anyway, all in all a disapointing day particulary when 4 guests had travelled from Staffordshire & went home hungry, we have definately had better of you in the past

Always good by Katie (rated 10/10)
I've eaten at Marmalade on a couple of occasions in the last 6 months and the food has always been great, excellent service too! Really good to find a restaurant that bothers to tell us where they source their food from :)

Marmalade by Servane Gouda (rated 2/10)
The service was good. The coffee was weak, the mashed potato was TERRIBLE, the home made chips were poor. The rest was OK but utterly over priced. I can only imagine they get away with it due to good location and the fact that the British are so bad at complaining (or Marmalade really don't care)
