Pub crawl to promote safer drinking
05/05/2006
Manchester City Council members are gathering for an alcohol free pub crawl tonight, make people "think about the harm excessive drinking can cause".
Didsbury, in south Manchester, is the venue for the event, which will see members of the environmental campaigns team join the Greater Manchester Police and the Primary Care Trust for the promotion.
According to the council, the idea is part of the Manchester City Council's Challenge Manchester: 100 Days 2006 campaign and those involved aim to prove that people do not need to drink to have fun.
The crawl starts at the Pitcher and Piano at the northern end of the village at 20:15 BST with non-alcoholic drinks being offered to anyone who orders a drink containing alcohol.
Councillor Neil Swannick, executive member for planning and the environment at Manchester City Council, said: "We don't expect people to stop drinking altogether but we want to give them the information they need to help them make responsible decisions about drinking."
Didsbury is popular with Manchester's student and local population alike and the village contains over a dozen pubs, including the Railway, the Clock Tower and the Slug and Lettuce.
