Drugs pub licence revoked
08/10/2008
A pub at the centre of a drugs and fighting row with neighbours has had its licence revoked by the council.
Manchester city council officials took away landlord David Chohan's licence for The Moston in Hiller Street North in Harpurhey due to "lack of management control".
Police had seen a major increase in reported incidents when Mr Chohan took over, the city council's licensing committee heard.
A total of 11 officers gave evidence at the committee meeting about fights, disorder and drug-taking.
Undercover surveillance footage showed a fight outside and what appeared to be drug use.
Manchester city council member for the environment, councillor Richard Cowell said: "When people like Mr Chohan conduct their business with such lack of concern for their neighbours, they should be in no doubt that we will take their licences away from them."
Mr Chohan's licence was taken away on October 6th.
Police originally served a closure order on September 4th, but the pub was allowed to reopen temporarily until a hearing had taken place.
According to the government's indices of deprivation, last year Harpurhey was the most deprived neighbourhood in England.
